High-tailed it to Ko Samui in early August despite having returned from Timor a month ago. My first time there and it was really nice and chilled out. What can I say, I’m a sucker for beachy hangouts.

This week has been a pretty mad rush to get all our gear in order before we leave tomorrow. As usual, I left the research till pretty late and only realized in the last couple of days that our experience would likely be infinitely more enjoyable if we brought along a ton of our own stuff like sleeping bags, snorkel gear and candles, mostly because these things aren’t readily available and won’t be easy to find there.

So I dubbed this the beachy version of my trip to Nepal two years ago a.k.a beach holiday Survivor style. My packing list is roughly the same because the conditions are roughly the same or worse — we’ll be camping out for two nights and will only probably have decent accommodation towards the end of our trip when we’re in Dili. Some places are really idyllic and eco in the truest sense of the word (read: no running water and electricity).

So this is my list, and they will all go into a 60 liter pack. It’d be interesting to see how much I overpacked when this is over.

  • Clothes – northface convertible pants, a few tops, another pair of capri pants, board shorts, rashie, swim suit, light windbreaker, might throw in a skirt
  • Toiletries
  • Hiking shoes
  • Camera underwater housing
  • Mask and snorkel (thanks Topo!)
  • Small headlight
  • Handheld torch
  • Three boxes of mosquito coil
  • Loo roll
  • Water bottle
  • Sleeping bag
  • Medicine/ first aid pouch
  • Candles
  • Notebooks and pencils to give to kids
  • Duct tape
  • Small waterproof duffel bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Bath towel
  • Two hand towels
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet wipes
  • Biore body wipes (I found these to be super effective on Mount Rinjani last year)
  • Water purification tablets
  • S-hooks, clothes pegs
  • Granola bars and other dry snacks

So we’re only slightly more than a week away from our trip to Timor Leste. I’ve always wanted to go ever since I saw a photo exhibition at the library and then Shree said she was keen to go. And now Sherry is coming along too, so we’re all feeling super psyched and I’m starting to get my head around all the things I need to pack and bring. We’re going to have such fun!
